Central Indiana was bombarded with freezing rain and other icy conditions all last week. The amount of accidents the weather caused is staggering, even to auto accident lawyers in Indianapolis. With winter upon us, these wrecks aren’t likely to stop anytime soon, but that doesn’t mean we can’t do everything in our power to try and keep ourselves out of them.
The carnage was spread throughout our state. Ramps were closed from US 31 all the way to I-465 as cars were sliding out of control. Ice-covered roads caused a Perry Township school bus to crash. Right next to the bus, two pickup trucks collided. There was even a wreck involving an Indianapolis sheriff’s department van that left five prisoners injured.
These stories were all over Marion County as nearly 2,000 emergency calls came in between 6 and 11am. Ultimately, the Indiana State Police had to respond to over 75 wrecks with at least 30 of those involving injuries. All of this chaos kept large chunks of Interstate 70, Interstate 65, and Interstate 465 closed for many hours.
INDOT has been trying to encourage people to drive slowly, avoid following closely behind the vehicles in front of you, and to make sure to use your turn signals. Others are actually criticizing INDOT, saying that they failed to prepare and did not have an appropriate amount of salt trucks to respond to the icy weather.
