There’s a great responsibility that you take on when you get behind the wheel of a vehicle. You become not only accountable for your own safety, but also for the safety of your passengers. There’s no quicker way to betray the responsibility to those traveling with you than when you drink and drive. Even if those passengers are adults capable of making their own decisions, driving them around while you’re intoxicated is incredibly irresponsible. But it becomes even more upsetting when we hear that those passengers are innocent children.
Just last week we shared a story that was certainly one of the most upsetting that we’ve recently come across. A woman was pulled over after being spotted driving 96mph. When police inspected her car, they found that not only was she twice the legal limit and speeding, but had two young children in the backseat. At that moment we were just happy that there wasn’t an accident.
But now just a week later, and we’ve seen what can happen when the situation doesn’t have as fortunate an ending. Another young mother was driving through northwestern Indiana with her four children. She lost control of the car and smashed into a bridge abutment. When police arrived they found her blood alcohol content to be .25, more than three times the legal limit. Everyone survived the crash, but one of her children was left with a broken leg. The mother didn’t have a valid license nor were all but one of the kids properly restrained. Hopefully this isn’t a worsening trend.
