Child Passenger Safety Week is Ending, Child Safety is Not

National Child Passenger Safety Week is Ending, Child Safety is Not | Indianapolis Personal Injury Lawyers

This week marks the end of a very significant awareness campaign. September 16th through the 22nd is National Child Passenger Safety Week. The importance of keeping your children safe while traveling cannot be understated, but it is often overlooked. In fact, nearly 75% of safety seats aren’t used properly in the US, leaving hundreds of thousands of kids at risk for serious injury in the event of an accident. Child Passenger Safety Week may end Saturday, but the safe practices need to continue in Indianapolis and across the country year round.

Indianapolis is recognizing National Child Passenger Safety Week in hopes of protecting kids during car accidents.2011 saw 90 children under the age of sixteen killed in crashes and another 7,000 injured – all in Indiana alone. The Indiana State Police have spent the week reminding parents of life-saving safety tips and laws that will be enforced.

Babies under the age of one and under 20lbs are required to be in a rear-facing safety seat. After they’re over a year old and 20lbs, they can be placed in a front-facing seat as long as it has an internal harness. Once a child is over 30lbs, they can be placed in booster seats, although it’s suggested that kids are left in a front-facing seat until they’re 40lbs.

It’s the law in Indiana to restrain all children under the age of 8 in a safety seat or booster seat, and all children under the age of 16 must be restrained by either a seat belt or child restraint system.

Other Tips For Keeping Children Safe in the Event of an Accident in Indianapolis

*Follow all vehicle manufacturer and car seat directions
*Shoulder harness straps should be snug and the retainer clip should be at armpit level
*Fill out and return the car seat registration card to stay updated on potential recalls
*Seat belts should lie against the shoulder, chest, and upper thighs, not stomach
*When possible always have children ride in the back seat
