Medical malpractice is one of the most troubling offenses Indiana residents may ever have to face. When you go to see a medical practitioner, you want to trust that you’re always in the hands of a caring professional, whether it’s for something as complex as heart surgery or as simple as a teeth cleaning. When that trust is broken, the results can leave you severely injured, financially crippled, and not knowing where to turn.
A dentist in Lafayette, Indiana has lost the trust of both his patients and the dentistry community after being found to have a long ‘pattern of unethical behavior.’ Now the Indiana State Board of Dentistry is permanently revoking his license after it launched an investigation into recent complaints as well as his sordid past, and medical malpractice seemed to be the only consistent factor throughout his career.
The Board looked into multiple complaints against the dentist from 2003 to 2006, before he started to practice in his current Lafayette location. In this time period, they found that he’d squeezed money from his patients by performing multiple unnecessary procedures on them, and on at least two occasions readily admitted to it.
Between May 2008 and June 2009 alone, he settled four medical malpractice claims, only to later lie about them when renewing his license in 2010.
In one particularly heinous act of malpractice, he needlessly pulled 12 teeth from a 7-year-old. And in another disgraceful act, he convinced a woman that she needed to have three teeth pulled as well as treatment on a dozen teeth and for gum disease with a bill totaling over $6,000. Even more audacious, after the expensive procedure he complimented her looks, gave her flowers, and ‘asked her husband if he wanted a divorce.’ The woman never went back to his office, and was later told by another dentist that the majority of the work he’d done on her was unnecessary.
