What is an IVC Filter?
IVC filters is a tiny device that is implanted by a doctor just below the kidney. The purpose of the filter is to stop loose blood clots that may be present in the legs from going to the heart or lungs. IVC filters weren’t designed as a permanent solution. They’re supposed to remain in the body only for the timeframe which the patient is most at risk of a blood clot.
A History of Danger
In 2014, the FDA released a safety communication covering a summary of the adverse events that had been reported to them. Reports of injury included filter migration, filter fracture, embolization of the filter, and perforation by the filter. Embolization of the filter is extremely dangerous. IVC filters are designed to stop blood clots. Yet, when the filter embolizes, it is traveling to the heart or lungs just like a blood clot would. When the device fractures or moves, it can cause serious harm to internal organs.
Multiple Manufacturers Responsible
There are many manufacturers of IVC filters and several are being sued. To point out the seriousness of the situation, let’s use manufacturer C.R. Bard as an example. Plaintiffs in lawsuits allege that C.R. Bard knew about the dangers of one particular design of an IVC filter that has a high likelihood of fracturing. Reports were found that showed the company knew the likelihood of fracture and that they suppressed that information.
There are more than 3,000 lawsuits for IVC filters filed by injured patients and their families. If you lost a loved one because of an adverse effect associated with an IVC filter, you could also be entitled to financial compensation. We know that no amount of money can make the pain go away if you’ve lost a loved one or if you’ve been seriously injured by an IVC filter. Our goal is to help you hold the manufacturer responsible.
