Logging may not be one of the first occupations that come to mind when people think of Indiana, but where there are trees, there are people paid to cut them down. Logging is actually one of the most dangerous jobs in the country, leading to a number of serious injuries, sometimes deaths, each and every year. Even on a smaller scale, cutting down trees will always present somewhat of a hazard, and it unfortunately took a southeastern Indiana man’s life last week.
The tragic accident took place in Ohio River County where a man was tasked with taking down trees for a local logging company. He’d cut down one tree when it fell and got lodged in the branches of another. With no way to get the massive tree unstuck, he instead had to try to cut down the tree it was wedged in. While cutting through the trunk, the stuck tree shifted loose and fell on top of the worker. He was pinned underneath and was sadly killed.
Details surrounding the incident are sparse at the moment. There’s no word if there were certain safety regulations in place that could have prevented this horrible tragedy. As personal injury lawyers in Indianapolis, we know that some jobs come with an inherent risk, and logging certainly falls into that category. Often however, it’s up to the owners of the company to ensure that everything is being done to keep their workers safe from harm. Neglecting to do so can easily lead to a terrible accident.
