Two work accidents occurred on the same day last week and both took the lives of Indiana workers. It’s a sad reminder of the dangerous work conditions that some residents of our state face on a daily basis. It should also be a reminder that these work conditions don’t have to be dangerous, and employers should be doing everything they can to prevent tragedies like these.
In one instance, an Indianapolis man was working on a cell phone tower with several other men. They were replacing a 1,800lb boom at the top of the tower when it fell to the ground. A falling cable wrapped around the man and took his life in an instant. An investigation is ongoing to determine what malfunction caused the heavy boom to slip.
Another accident would soon take place in Marion and this one was even more destructive. There was a chemical explosion at a nearby stamping plant. A chlorine dioxide tank erupted, killing one contractor and injuring several others. The plant was quickly evacuated while hazardous material crews worked to contain the spill. Many of the workers had the chemicals on their skin and if inhaled it could have caused serious lung issues.
We see far too families affected by devastating work accidents. It’s not just up to employers to look out for their own safety. The companies that employ them have the responsibility to send their workers home to their families each day.
