The recent Colonial Hills Baptist Church bus accident has shocked friends, families, and an entire community. While those who were injured recover and those that were lost are mourned, the cause of the tragedy continues to be investigated. So many people were affected on that day and will likely be affected for a lifetime, whether it be from a lasting injury or the painful memories. They all deserve an explanation.
Marion County officials believe they’re coming closer to an answer, but the investigation has dragged on much longer than they’d hoped. The driver claims that the brakes failed, leaving him helpless to control the bus, and investigators are working diligently to see if his claims are true.
For many people, this tragedy has put privately-owned buses in the spotlight. Regulations and inspections are not as stringent for these vehicles as they are, for say, a commercial or school bus. Since detailed federal review records aren’t kept for private buses, there’s likely little information on the bus’ condition at the time of the wreck.
According to a former Indiana State Police motor carrier inspector, timetables don’t exist for when the federal government inspects private buses, and they can go for years and years without their being evaluated for their safety.
The investigation will continue, that much is certain. What will come of it, we can’t be sure. We can only hope that those who have suffered will get the sense of closure that they deserve.
