We stress it a lot but only because it’s very true: car wrecks cause a lot of damage. The most serious damage is always to people because injuries can drastically degrade their quality of life. Auto wrecks are just destructive in general, and they can cost a whole lot of money. That’s why the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) will often sue to recover money for damage to state highways. They are most often aimed at trucking companies as truck accidents in Indiana will often do the most damage to streets and infrastructure.
The trucking companies definitely don’t like having to payout large settlements, and they’re doing everything they can to avoid it. One company is now asking the state appeals court to limit INDOT’s ability to file these suits.
INDOT has increased the amount that they’ve been billing companies for property damage. It’s actually increased by over 50% in the last year alone, coming close to the $7 million mark. It seems that the state is tired of footing the bill for expensive repairs and intends to make those responsible pay up.
The trucking company that is appealing a court ruling has been asked to pay $60,000 to repair guardrails and pavement after one of their trucks wrecked on Interstate 70. The trucking company is trying to maintain that these repairs are already covered by tax money. The Indiana Attorney General asserts that the state is well within its right to seek compensation for any damage to state property caused by negligence.
