Hurt In Any Accident?

Recently, on the Indiana 227 near Richmond, two cars collided head-on, resulting in the death of one of the drivers; the other driver survived, but was trapped in her car and suffered injuries.  Apparently, the driver who wound up perishing in the crash had abruptly shifted from the westbound lane to the eastbound lane.

According to 2005 data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there are tens of thousands of head-on collisions annually, and though they make up roughly 2% of all vehicular crashes in the U.S., they account for approximately 10% of all fatal crashes.  One car slamming head-on into another can result not only in death, but in traumatic brain injuries, injuries to the spine, broken bones, deep cuts and abrasions.

The reasons people get into a head-on collision include the following:

  • They may be driving while intoxicated.
  • They’re fatigued and nod off at the wheel, causing their car to slip into oncoming traffic.
  • They’re distracted, often by texting or cellphone use.
  • They’re driving without headlights at night, and fail to see where two lanes are separated.  They also fail to make themselves visible to cars coming from the opposite direction.
  • They’re experiencing road rage and are trying to cut around a car that’s driving in front of them.
  • Certain road conditions, such as patches of ice or sharp turns, could increase the chances of a head-on collision, particularly if a driver is speeding or has poor control over their car.

Other drivers may not have enough time to react to a car that’s coming directly at them.  Even if the accident doesn’t take place on a highway, where cars are traveling at relatively high speeds, the impact usually causes devastation to the people involved and wrecks their vehicles.

If you or a loved one are involved in such an accident, contact experienced Indianapolis auto accident lawyers to review your case.  We will help you deal with insurance companies and, in cases when someone’s negligence or recklessness caused the crash, fight for you to obtain compensation from those responsible.
