Hurt In Any Accident?

Over the weekend a young college student hydroplaned in his car. It rolled and landed upside-down in a waterlogged ditch. He passed away when he wasn’t able to escape from the flooded wreckage. Now Indiana State Police are hoping to educate motorists on the reality of drowning deaths in vehicles and what you can do if you find yourself in a submerged car.

Cars will often only float for around 10 minutes, sometimes much less, so time is the most important factor. There’s no time to call for emergency help, you need to get out of the car as quickly as possible.

Avoid a drowning after a car accident in deep water.Cars will often sink front-end first, but this is where you’ll want to escape. You’re going to want to climb out through a window, and the windows in the front are often much larger than those in the back. After freeing yourself from your seatbelt, be sure to roll the windows down. Even when submerged in water power windows should still work. If they don’t they can be smashed by a hard kick or an ‘emergency hammer,’ which can kept in the glovebox. It may seem like a better idea to open a door, but opening doors can actually cause the car to sink much faster.

If you have children in the car, get them out first. Removing the head rests can make it easier to pull them to safety. Get them out through the windows and onto the roof of the car. Once you’re all safely out of the car, now you can call 911.
