Hurt In Any Accident?

A fatal crash involving a small child on a moped highlights the reason why new moped laws will be going into effect. Historically small mopeds have basically been unregulated. Indianapolis accident attorneys want moped owners to be aware of the new regulations before they take effect.

Just before 8pm on October 28th a 7 year old boy was riding as a passenger on a moped when a Jeep Cherokee struck it. The boy was thrown from the moped and unfortunately did not survive the accident. A witness indicates the tail light of the moped was dim making it difficult to see.

When the new law takes effect next year it will be illegal for certain mopeds to have any passengers due to safety concerns. Some wonder if the law had been in effect already if this tragic fatality would have been prevented. This law has been in the works for five years.

The Indiana BMV issued a press release with a video that highlights the aspects of the new law including:

  • Mopeds will need to be registered and licensed with the BMV.
  • Anyone riding a moped under the age of 18 will be required to wear a helmet.
  • Passengers will not be allowed.

One aspect that will not change with the new law is drivers do not need to be licensed to operate a moped.
