This weekend saw an incredibly tragic accident occur early Saturday morning. A man and woman were traveling along College Avenue on a motorcycle when another vehicle collided with them head-on. The two were thrown from the bike and lost their lives at the scene. So, what could cause such a senseless accident? Well, police believe alcohol may have been a factor.
When that is suspected a unique group is often called to the scene – the Marion County Fatal Alcohol Crash Team (FACT). According to FACT themselves, they are a “specialized team of law enforcement officers trained to combat the impaired driver who either kills or seriously injures another due to his or her impairment.” Specific to Marion County, this team also investigates many instances where a driver causes a serious or fatal accident and flees the scene because history dictates that this is often the action of an impaired driver.
And FACT is having an impact. In fact, they were among a few elite teams in the nation to join a study called Working to Increase DWI Conviction Rates. Put together by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, this study will act as a guide to other areas that wish to put together similar teams.
Beyond enforcing DUI laws in Marion County, the FACT team is also active in educating our youth about the dangers of driving impaired by staging mock crashes and other community events.
