In July, an unimaginable tragedy took place along I-465. An out-of-control church bus overturned in a median, taking the lives of several onboard and injuring many others. An entire community was shocked and left to mourn those that were lost. In the wake of the accident many questions were raised. Those affected simply wanted to know what happened — what was the cause of such a heartbreaking accident? Well, months later the Indiana State Police report has finally been released and hopefully some of those questions will be answered.
It was long speculated that the brakes on the bus had failed, a mechanical issue that made the bus careen out of control. The report, however, claims the brakes were in working condition at the time of the wreck. According to the report, speed was a major factor in the Indianapolis bus accident.
The bus was apparently traveling too fast to make the turn off of the interstate. There were several indications that the driver had tried to steer and brake but wasn’t able to avoid hitting the barrier wall. By the time the bus hit the barrier, there was no way to keep it from tipping over on its side.
So, it would appear that driver error played a major role in the accident, but the church isn’t looking to place blame. They have simply called for the community to pray for the man who wasn’t just a bus driver but was also their friend.
