Parents have the ultimate responsibility to protect their children. This is especially true when it comes to traveling. There are several laws in place about keeping children properly restrained while driving, but the fact of the matter is as car accident lawyers in Indianapolis, we believe parents should have an innate desire to keep their children safe in an automobile. That’s what makes a recent Terre Haute accident so disturbing.
A mother is facing very serious charges after she wrecked her SUV into a pickup truck. Her children were in the vehicle at the time, and the woman is also believed to have been intoxicated at the time of the wreck. The accident occurred last weekend at the intersection of Hulman Street and US 41 where the woman allegedly slammed into the back of the pickup truck while it was stopped at a red light.
Inside her vehicle were her three children. According to a police press release, “Only one child appeared to be properly restrained in the vehicle at the time of the crash. The children’s father was summoned to the scene and the three children were released to him after being medically evaluated.” If there’s any good news out of this story, it’s that no one was seriously injured in the accident.
The trooper that responded to the accident has claimed to have smelled alcohol on the mother and said she displayed signs of intoxication. She also failed an onsite breathalyzer, blowing 0.248 – well above the legal limit. She could be facing charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated with passengers under 18 and charges of neglect of dependents and intoxicated-endangerment.
