Obviously there are many people who are forever affected after a deadly accident. In the wake of these tragedies, we usually hear the perspectives of the victim’s loved ones. Friends and families will speak out about their loss, how much they miss them, how their lives will be forever changed. It’s a bit more unusual to get the side of the person responsible for the deadly wreck, but the perpetrator of a deadly Indianapolis hit-and-run is speaking out.
In November of 2012, the woman was driving on the city’s northeast side when struck and killed a young man. Not knowing what she hit, she drove away from the scene. Now she has been sentenced for her crimes and will be spending at least three years behind bars.
At her sentencing she actually read a statement to the victim’s family. “News that I had taken a life shook me to my core. Finding out he was my age destroyed me. Not a day has passed that I never thought about [him].”
The young woman was found guilty of failure to stop at an accident causing death as well as causing a death while operating an automobile and intoxicated. As personal injury lawyers in Indianapolis, we know her true punishment might likely be living with what she did for the rest of her life. It’s a sentiment shared by the accused’s family who said, “The accident will alter the course of both of our families forever. Many times we were consumed with grief over what happened. [The driver] will never get over what happened.”
The driver wants her story to be a warning to others. She will even be going as far as visiting schools to teach children about the life-altering and life-ending consequences of drinking and driving.
