A 49-year-old male motorist from Tipton has been arrested on a charge of criminal recklessness after a wreck that killed his girlfriend. The alleged actions of the motorist in the accident’s aftermath have drawn both national and international attention.
Tipton County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the scene of the accident at about 10:49 p.m. on Thursday, October 30. Deputies subsequently requested assistance from the Indiana State Patrol.
Failure To Stop At Intersection
Authorities reported that a 2004 Ford Explorer had been traveling to the east on County Road 400 South when came to a T-type intersection at County Road 500 West. The SUV allegedly failed to stop, and it continued through the intersection and into a driveway. From there, it careened off the driveway and into a fence post, a utility pole and a tree. The pole was severed at impact.
Man Proceeds With Body To House
Rather than immediately call for emergency assistance following the crash, the man allegedly pulled the body of his 38-year-old female passenger from the vehicle and into the living room of a nearby home. From there, the man called 911. When responding officers arrived, he was reportedly drinking a beer. First responders pronounced the woman dead at the scene.
Investigation Into Motorist’s Actions
Both occupants of the SUV were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash, according to law enforcement. The male motorist sustained minor injuries in the fatal wreck. The overall investigation into the accident is ongoing, and a specific investigation into the actions of the driver after the accident has also been launched. Authorities are awaiting the results of toxicology tests.
