Whether you’re a driver or a passenger, feeling your car jerk to a sudden stop because of a loud crash is unsettling. You feel helpless to cope with an unusual and unpredictable situation. But after spending a few minutes recovering, you must get up from your seat and take the following steps to minimize the affects of your situation.
Make sure nobody is hurt. Check up on all the occupants of all the vehicles involved to make sure nobody is seriously injured. If someone is, call emergency services immediately. Don’t offer any explanations or apologies at this time because your words can be used against you in any criminal or civil proceedings.
Remain with or near your vehicle until help arrives but only if it is safe to do so. If any of the cars involved are in danger of catching fire, make sure everyone leaves the vicinity immediately. Warn passersby not to approach.
Write down what you remember about the accident. Record your speed and direction of travel, what you and the other driver did, weather conditions, visibility, what happened during the collision, damage to the car, and condition of the occupants. It’s important to list the names and number of people involved in the collision. If you don’t have a pen and paper handy, use the memo or texting functions of your smartphone.
Take pictures. Use your cellphone camera to take pictures of the vehicles, the damage, the road conditions, people involved, witnesses, traffic signs and conditions, and any nearby structures that may have sustained damage.
Exchange contact and insurance information. Indiana requires that all drivers carry a specific level of auto insurance. Take down each other’s name and address, driver’s license number, license plate number, insurance policy number and insurance agent contact information. If any witnesses are available, take down their contact information as well.
