What is Taxotere®?
Taxotere® (docetaxel) is a chemotherapy drug manufactured by Sanofi-Aventis. It was originally developed to treat breast cancer, non-small cell lung cancer, advanced stomach cancer, head and neck cancer, and metastatic prostate cancer. Although most chemotherapy drugs do come with a risk of hair loss, Taxotere® is different because many patients developed alopecia. Alopecia is a skin disorder where hair does not grow on a part of the body where it normally grows.
How Long Has Taxotere® Been Around?
Taxotere® was approved by the FDA for use in certain cancer diagnoses in 1999. Taxotere® is provided during a one hour-long infusion every three to four weeks. By 2005, women began reporting permanent hair loss. Many plaintiffs of the lawsuit stated that had they known that alopecia was a permanent potential side effect, they would have opted for a different chemotherapy drug.
Lawsuits Filed Against Manufacturer
Lawsuits against Sanofi-Aventis allege that cancer patients developed alopecia or neutropenic enterocolitis, which is an inflammation located at the start of the large intestine. Neutropenic enterocolitis is often deadly.
In December 2015, the FDA acknowledged that Taxotere® can cause alopecia and a warning label is now required. Yet, this news comes as too little, too late for many people who’ve already filed lawsuits against the manufacturer. There are likely more people who have yet to come forward.
A cancer diagnosis on its own is devastating. Treatment is difficult for the patient and their family. The cost of treatment for cancer, whether the patient has insurance or not can be financially devastating. Loss of income, secondary infections, and losing time with loved ones makes cancer recovery difficult. Choosing a chemotherapy drug like Taxotere® should offer hope and not fears of permanent hair loss and dangerous infections.
