Last week, a police chase came to an end with a car crash on Interstate 70 around Holt Road.
As attorneys, we believe in justice, and we do think that people who commit crimes ought to atone for them. However, police chases have been attracting scrutiny around the country because they so often result in injuries and property damage that — to some minds, at least — vastly outweigh the original alleged offense.
According to the Indianapolis Star, the pursuit began around 12:40 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 18 in the vicinity of Lafayette Road and 82nd Street. It is believed that police wanted to pull the driver over because they believed that one of the three people in the vehicle had stolen from a FedEx truck.
The vehicle apparently would not stop even when an officer indicated it should. It proceeded down Lynnhurst Drive and entered the interstate. Shortly before the crash, an officer “bumped” the car with his vehicle. The vehicle was also shot at in an attempt to stop it from moving.
After the crash, at least one person was taken to a hospital.
At this point, it is not known whether the chase injured anyone other than those who were in the vehicle being pursued. If it did, though, that person would be wise to work closely with a personal injury attorney. In circumstances such as this, it is not always easy to get the responsible party to own up to his or her mistakes.
