A suspected carjacking resulted in a police chase and a subsequent fatality in Indianapolis. The chase allegedly involved security personnel from Eskenazi Hospital, and it ultimately ended in the death of a 79-year-old motorist whose car was hit by the allegedly stolen vehicle during the chase.
Hospital Security Gets Involved
The IMPD reported that two men were allegedly involved in stealing a car on the northwest side during the morning of June 1. From there, they went to Wishard to pick up a third man. An all-points bulletin subsequently went out regarding the stolen car. A security officer from Eskenazi Hospital then apparently elected to pursue the vehicle after hearing the all-points bulletin. A chase ensued as the driver of the stolen car tried to elude the security officer. Ultimately, the chase led to the fatal wreck at West 16th Street and Riverside, not far from Kuntz Stadium.
After the crash, the driver of the stolen car fled from the scene on foot. A responding K9 unit quickly apprehended the individual, and the suspect was bitten by a police dog in the process. The two passengers remained at the scene of the accident. One was taken into custody while the other passenger was transported to an area hospital due to suspected injuries. He was expected to be arrested after receiving treatment at the hospital.
Chases Subject to Laws
When an innocent motorist dies during a police chase, the circumstances of that pursuit are typically investigated. Most chases involve municipal police officers, sheriff’s deputies or state patrol officers. In this case, a private security officer working at a hospital reportedly became involved. In any such pursuit, those participating in the chase must abide by relevant state statutes, municipal ordinances and administrative rules.
Depending upon the actual circumstances of a fatal collision arising from a such a chase, survivors of the deceased may consider wrongful death litigation that seeks compensation for pain and suffering as well as loss of companionship.
