There’s no doubt that drunk drivers are dangerous. We hear new stories every week about people who chose to drink and drive and got into an accident, forever changing the lives of everyone involved. Usually those involved are innocent motorists, people in the wrong place at the wrong time that are struck by a reckless, intoxicated driver. But a recent incident on Indianapolis’ northside goes to show that even those responsible for stopping drunk drivers aren’t safe.
Early Sunday morning, Indiana State Police received a call that a deer had been struck by a car along I-465. A trooper quickly responded. With his emergency lights on to protect the disabled car, the officer attempted to pull the deer off the road. But one accident quickly became two when a careless driver smashed into the back of his patrol car.
Another trooper soon arrived on the scene and found that this driver was intoxicated. He placed the man under arrest and put him in his patrol car, but the chain of disasters still wasn’t over. Another drunk driver speeding down Interstate 465 crashed into his patrol car.
Both intoxicated drivers suffered injuries and had to be taken to Wishard Hospital. The second responding officer was also taken to a local hospital to have his injuries assessed. The injuries he suffered were minor, but the two patrol cars were completely demolished.
