Often when we discuss big truck accidents, we are talking about 18-wheelers. Tractor trailers are the most common big trucks that are involved in accidents in and around Indianapolis. But there are other trucks that can cause serious accidents like buses, delivery trucks, and dump trucks. The latter was the cause of a deadly accident last week, illustrating how these commercial vehicles should always be considered dangerous.
The accident occurred on the southeast side of the city last Friday afternoon. According to the Indianapolis Metro Police Department, a 40-year-old driver lost control of his car and ended up driving head-on into oncoming traffic. It was there that he collided with a dump truck and lost his life. The exact reason that the man lost control is still under investigation.
Beyond their size and weight, dump trucks pose a lot of other dangers to Indiana motorists. Often they are carrying loose material which can fall out of the truck and become a roadway hazard. The top heavy nature of dump trucks also makes them prone to tipping over, which can easily lead to a life-threatening situation. A dump truck with a raised trailer can also run the risk of pulling down power lines or striking other overhead bridges and walkways.
Ultimately, as a driver you need to treat dump trucks for what they are: a big truck with the power to do a lot damage. You don’t want to have a run-in with one of these vehicles.
