Tuesday morning a man in Bloomington casually walked into a convenience store and bought some tobacco. He then headed to a car wash, hoping to rinse away the evidence of the horrific accident that had occurred shortly before.
The man was driving east along Moores Pike when he was distracted by an electronic device. When he looked back at the road, it was too late to stop before crashing into the motorcycle in front of him. The impact threw the rider to the ground, but the distracted driver fled the scene, leaving the critically injured biker lying helpless on the road.
A witness saw the hit-and-run and quickly called 911. They claimed to have seen the violent collision and also saw the car back over the biker again while trying to flee the scene. By the time emergency crews responded to the wreck, the motorcyclists had already passed away from his traumatic head injuries.
The driver headed to the aforementioned convenience store and car wash, but hours later either his conscience or fear of more severe consequence convinced him to turn himself over to police. He’s now been booked into Monroe County jail where he’s facing charges of ‘leaving the scene of an accident involving death,’ a class C felony in Indiana. A conviction could end with the man receiving a 2-8 year prison sentence and $10,000 in fines.
