As personal injury lawyers in Indianapolis, we often work with families who have suffered the ultimate loss. Every year our state has stories of accidents that end in heartbreak, but our state is also full of incredibly brave men and women who jump at the chance to save others. Friends, family, and an entire community are remembering such heroes a year after their death.
Last year, a group of friends were swimming in the Big Blue River. Tragedy struck when a young woman accidentally fell over a dam. Recent flooding in the area had made the area around the dam incredibly dangerous. Still, all of her friends jumped in to try and save her.
Of two of those young men who heroically jumped in after their friend, one was taken to the hospital with critical injuries and tragically later passed away; the other was swept under the current and drowned. The girl they’d jumped in for was saved that day because of their actions, however.
One year later, those involved and the community that loved them are reflecting on the loss. According to the mother of a survivor, “It’s just hard to believe it’s been a year because there are still days it feels like yesterday. There are still times you think about it and you have that physical reaction you had that day.”
On the day marking the one year anniversary of their deaths, the city of Franklin, IN held the Franklin Strong Ride. The ride remembered the young men who lost their lives and raised funds for a scholarship.
