Earlier in the month we shared the unfortunate story of a car that collided with a train and tragically took the lives of two young friends and seriously injured another. But recent actions by the lost teen’s community is showing that even in the midst of a great tragedy a community will rally around one another for support.
On October 28th, a train struck a car in Farmland, a shocking and heartbreaking accident that left many with questions. More details are beginning to emerge about the cause behind the fatal accident and it seems that alcohol played a major factor. Farmland Town Marshal has stated the wreck was a ‘tragic example of the dangers of drinking and driving,’ as the driver was found to be intoxicated at the time of the wreck.
This impairment may have caused them to enter the crossing even with the red lights flashing, an even easier mistake to make since that crossing doesn’t have arms that block the road. With trains in that area traveling at 60 miles per hour, the chance of getting out of the way in time are slim.
The Farmland community has come together by holding fundraisers to help the victim’s families cover expenses like funeral and burial costs. A nighttime vigil was also held at the high school they attended where hundreds of people turned out to honor their memory. The families ultimately hope to establish a scholarship in their children’s names to benefit students in the future and help their memory live on with future generations.
