Do you know what the Indiana Organ Procurement Organization (IOPO) is? They are a link between organ transplant recipients and potential donors. Their mission is to inform the public about the power of organ donation and to make it easy for them to register. Fatal accidents are always a tragedy, but that tragedy can actually save others. That’s what the IOPO stands for.
As accident lawyers in Indianapolis, we’re constantly working with families that have been devastated by deadly accidents. We know the toll accidents take, which is why it’s always comforting to hear that something positive has come from something so heartbreaking.
Each year the IOPO submits a donor to be memorialized on a float during the Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena, California. This year a floragraph, or a picture composed of flowers, of a young Terre Haute boy will be featured in the parade. In May 2011, the boy was in a serious car accident and declared brain dead. His parents decided to donate their child’s organs, a decision which benefited an adult and three other children.
The loss of the Terre Haute boy’s short life will be mourned, but the generosity of his family will be honored during the parade in January. Before that the floragraph was displayed at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day in Terre Haute.
