Having a reckless driver behind the wheel of a passenger bus is incredibly dangerous. But what could be more dangerous? How about a bus that is moving without anyone behind the wheel? That’s what happened in a recent bus accident in Indianapolis.
Last Thursday, a driver hopped out of their bus to take a quick break. The bus, however, wasn’t ready to stop just yet. At the height of rush hour, the bus rolled down Gateway Drive with no one in control of it. Those who were waiting at the bus stop were understandably nervous. It needed to be stopped. If the bus was allowed to pick up speed, a dangerous situation could become even worse,
According to one witness, “Thank God it didn’t go no further than the curb it was on because further than the grass and the cars [were] apartments… If it wasn’t for the guy to stop traffic, it might have been very tragic.”
A quick-thinking bystander ran out and stopped traffic so that the bus could glide by without striking another vehicle. His actions likely kept anyone from being injured as the bus collided with a curb as opposed to a person.
An investigation will determine if the accident was the fault of the driver or if something mechanical occurred like parking brake failure. Regardless of the cause, even a simple mistake could have caused major property damage or even the loss of life. An investigation will require the driver to submit to a drug and alcohol screening and they have already been placed on paid leave.
