What are DePuy Knees?
DePuy knees are knee replacements that are made by DePuy, owned by Johnson & Johnson. The FDA, the government agency in charge of making sure that medical devices such as knee replacements are safe for use, has issued recalls on specific DePuy knees and components used in their replacement systems: LPS Diaphyseal Sleeve (part of DePuy’s LPS Limb Preservation System), five separate PFC Sigma Knee Systems, and Attune Knee Tibial Articulation Surface Instruments.
DePuy is the second largest knee replacement manufacturer in the world. Since 2003, they’ve been the focus of more than 270 devices or components. Some of the recalled DePuy knees were categorized as Class I recalls. This is the FDA’s most serious classification; hospitals and surgeons were told to stop using the LPS Diaphyseal Sleeve.
For patients who received a DePuy knee replacement that are subject to the recall, there are serious risks. The risks are partially associated with which knee replacement the patient received. For patients who received the LPS Diaphyseal Sleeve, risks include infections in the knee, bone, loss of function of the leg, possible amputation, and damage or death to the soft tissue. Many patients also reported swelling and joint pain, nerve damage, and joint instability.
