Indiana State Police responded to over 80 accident reports early Monday afternoon. Half an inch of snow fell by 1:00 p.m. and caused a lot of trouble for Indianapolis motorists.
Multiple vehicles were involved in crashes near the southeast side of I-465 at the I-65 interchange. Accidents also occurred near the northwest side’s Michigan Road exit and at I-70 and Harding Street.
I-65 was closed between Greenwood and Whiteland due to the crashes.
Many of the accidents took place on the southern half of the I-465 loop near Mann Road and Pendleton Pike. More than 12 semi-trucks and other vehicles were in the pileup at I-465. The eastbound lanes were closed for over an hour.
Even though several people in the crashes were injured, none were life-threatening.
Getting Your Vehicle Ready for Winter Travel
• Check to make sure that your defroster and heater work properly.
• Check all lights.
• Check Anti-Freeze levels.
• Check Wipers and windshield fluid.
• Check tires – condition and pressure.
• Keep an auto-safety kit in your vehicle.
• Keep a full tank of gas, or no less than half of a tank.
Also make sure to stock your vehicle with a flashlight, cell phone and charger, food and water, flares, blanket and extra clothing, matches or a lighter, jumper cables, ice scraper, and a small shovel.
Always tell someone where you are going.
Indiana winters can be harsh. Road conditions after a snow or ice storm become dangerous and sometimes deadly. Before you get on the road this winter give yourself enough time to get to your destination safely and if you can, stay at home.
