Prempro is a prescription hormone replacement drug that is used to treat symptoms of menopause. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a general term used to describe an attempt to substitute synthetic estrogen and progesterone (called progestin) for the hormones lost naturally during a woman's life cycle leading up to and following menopause. Decreased levels of estrogen may cause hot flashes, vaginal dryness, sleep disturbances, or other bothersome side effects.
In the 1970s, the nation’s leading menopausal drug was Premarin. Made by Wyeth Laboratories, sales of Premarin fell after it was discovered that Premarin caused endometrial cancer. Wyeth then determined that combining estrogen with progestin eliminated the side effect of endometrial cancer. Wyeth combined Premarin and progestin into a single pill called Prempro, saying that it would also provide added protection to women’s hearts and bones, would help prevent Alzheimer’s disease and depression, and would increase women’s sexual vitality.
In 2002, a federal study known as the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) revealed that Prempro led to an increased risk of stroke, breast cancer, heart attacks, and circulatory diseases. Scheduled to end in 2005, the study was immediately stopped because researchers felt that the elevated risk of breast cancer as well as higher than normal rates of heart attack, stroke, and blood clots outweighed the benefits that HRT may have provided against hip fractures and colon cancer. In 2003, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ordered Premarin and Prempro to carry a warning listing the risks for heart disease, stroke, breast cancer, pulmonary embolisms, and blood clots. These potential dangers have opened Wyeth up to countless HRT lawsuits.
