Permax (pergolide) was a drug originally manufactured by Eli Lilly and Company and later by Valeant Pharmaceuticals to treat Parkinson's disease. Permax entered the market in 1989. The first major concern with Permax arose in 2003, when the FDA requested that Lilly update the drug's information to warn about possible heart valve damage. In December 2003, the FDA asked for a warning about the risk of patients falling asleep while doing daily activities.
The drug was removed from the marketplace after two studies published in January 2007 by the New England Journal of Medicine linked Permax with a greater risk of heart valve problems. One study by Italian researchers showed that nearly one-fourth of Parkinson's patients taking Permax had moderate to severe heart problems. Another study by German doctors found that Permax patients were five to seven times more likely to have leaky heart valves than people on other types of Parkinson's medicine. Cardiologists from the Mayo Clinic have also found that Permax causes heart-valve damage and have recommended that anyone with heart problems avoid taking any form of pergolide.
