Indiana workplace accidents are a far too common occurrence. Office buildings, restaurants, and factories each have their own unique dangers but no workplace poses as many threats as construction sites. Some of the dangers include the risk of electrocution, asbestos exposure, back injuries from heavy lifting, falling from dangerous heights, fires and explosions, and countless other hazards.
Indiana workers are expected to take a measure of personal responsibility for their own safety, especially when it comes to following proper procedures and safety guidelines. But what happens when these necessary guidelines aren’t in place? Or when workers aren’t properly trained? What happens when a company fails their workers and allows them to be injured… or worse?
A construction company has been fined by Indiana regulators after the wrongful death of an employee in early May. According to reports the 50-year-old was working inside an aerial bucket repairing the Milton-Madison Bridge when he fell. He became pinned between the bucket and a large steel beam and oxygen was cut off to his brain. He passed away in the hospital a few days later.
The Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration has now cited the construction company for two violations related to the bridge worker’s death. The company was cited twice for both not offering proper safety training on how to operate the aerial bucket as well as for having an employee operating the machine while not being trained. Each violation cost the company $5,000 for fines totaling $10,000.
It wasn’t the only incident for the construction company this year; it wasn’t even the only major work accident in that month. Another employee of the company was killed in an Indianapolis work accident when he was caught beneath a 40,000lb excavator.
