Manufactured by Merck & Co., this HPV vaccine was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2006. At the time of its approval, Merck & Co., claimed that clinical trials had proven the vaccine to be between 90-100 percent effective in preventing the transmission of four common strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV accounts for most cases of cervical cancer. Some members of the medical community have suggested that the FDA erred in its rush to approve Gardasil and did not study the vaccine's possible side effects thoroughly.
The FDA declared Gardasil to be safe but also acknowledged that "consumers, parents, health care professionals and others have raised questions regarding the safety of the HPV vaccine, Gardasil." On August 19, 2009, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) published an article, coauthored by the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control, that described 12,424 reports of adverse events following Gardasil vaccination. Of those, 772 were serious events.
A Gardasil safety review assessed various adverse events, including nausea, headaches, Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), transverse myelitis, motor neuron disease, venous thromboembolic events (VTEs), pancreatitis, autoimmune disorders and deaths. As of December 31, 2008, 32 deaths had been reported to the vaccine safety review system, but health officials said there was not a common pattern to the deaths that would suggest a causal link to the vaccine.
