The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Yasmin® for use in the United States in 2001, while Yaz® was approved for use in 2006. Although there are numerous brands of birth control pills available, Yasmin® and Yaz® dominate the market with more than one-quarter market share between them. Manufactured by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, these products contain a combination of the hormones estrogen (ethinyl estradiol) and progestin (drospirenone), which prevent pregnancy by inhibiting the release of certain hormones that play key roles in the development of the egg and preparation of the lining of the uterus for implantation of the embryo.
In August 2009, European researchers linked drospirenone to an increased incidence of potentially fatal blood clots. By obstructing blood flow, blood clots can cause heart attacks, stroke, and death in otherwise healthy women. Research has also indicated that drospirenone can cause dangerous levels of potassium. This condition, called hyperkalemia, can cause cardiac arrhythmia and sudden death in severe cases.
Federal drug regulators have twice admonished Bayer for overstating the benefits of Yaz® and Yasmin® while failing to inform consumers of the dangerous risks they carry. In February 2008 and again in March 2009, the FDA warned Bayer that its advertisements for Yaz® and Yasmin® violated the U.S. Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act by minimizing the “serious risks associated with use of the drug.” Drug regulators also ordered Bayer to stop marketing Yaz® for treatment of the symptoms of Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) because it had not received approval for that purpose.
When companies act negligently and allow a dangerous drug into the marketplace, it is you as the consumer who is hurt while the company rakes in a profit. Negligent drug companies must be held liable for the lives they destroy. Everyone knows if you are in Indiana and have been hurt by a dangerous drug like Yaz®, you call Ken Nunn. I am a drug injury lawyer who knows Indiana pharmaceutical laws. I will fight to help you get the settlement you deserve.
