‘Complete Streets’ Ordinance Hopes to Curb Accidents | Indianapolis Bicycle Accident Lawyer

A recent study titled ‘Bicycle Collisions in Indiana’ conducted by the Indiana University Center for Criminal Justice Research has found a 7% increase in traffic collisions involving bicycles since 2009 and 2010 — even more frightening, of those accidents 9% result in death or serious injury for the rider.

Now new campaigns are being rolled out across Indiana that hope to prevent bike and pedestrian accidents. Many of the campaigns focus on raising motorists’ awareness of cyclists, reminding them to share the roads.

One such campaign is catching traction in Indianapolis. According to the ‘Complete Streets’ program, their message is that ‘projects need to account for everyone using the road.’ This would include adding bike lanes and sidewalks to make Indianapolis streets safer for pedestrians and bicycle riders.

The city of Indianapolis hopes that by 2015 it will have over 200 miles of bike lanes.

The ‘Complete Streets’ ordinance requires that the city measure the program’s success by keeping track of improvements, as well as rates of crashes and injuries. It would also monitor any increases in children riding bikes to school and rates of public transportation use.

Indianapolis bicycle accidents will hopefully be curbed by 'Complete Streets' ordinance. But bike lanes aren’t enough to prevent all Indianapolis bike accidents — education is important as well. So, the city is stressing that riders have responsibility, too. Cyclists shouldn’t ride against traffic, should stop at all traffic signals and stop signs, and use appropriate hand signals. Cyclists that break common traffic laws will be targeted by Indiana police and will be ticketed just like any other motorist.

Many new roads that are being constructed in Indiana are already being designed with bikes and public transportation in mind. And many additional bike lanes are being added to preexisting Indiana roads.

‘Complete Streets’ has already been implemented in 300 cities across the nation, adding bus lanes, roundabouts, and public bus stops. Many cities in Indiana are already employing the program including massive efforts in Columbus, Bloomington, and Evansville.

The ‘Complete Streets’ ordinance in Indianapolis will be sent to the Public Works Committee for further review.

Car in Eastern Indiana Went Airborne Before Hitting House | Indiana Pedestrian Accident Lawyers

A demolished car finally came to a stop against an Eastern Indiana home after sailing over 80 feet, leaving the driver dead. According to statistics, most fatal Indiana accidents occur between 2pm and 10pm. The Wayne County car accident was an exception, but barely, it occurred Monday night shortly after 10:25pm.

According to Indiana State Police, the 23-year-old was speeding southbound on Thornburg Road, south of the Randolph County line. Apparently the young man went airborne for the first time that night when he flew over a steep rise in the road.

He quickly lost control of the car and went barreling off the road. He struck a large rock and went airborne again, careening 81 feet before he violently struck a tree and was ejected from the vehicle. The car ended its runaway ride when it slammed into a house southeast of Muncie.

Sheriff’s Departments from Randolph and Wayne Counties and Wayne County EMS units responded to the accident but the driver from Modoc, IN was pronounced dead at the scene. Seat belts can reduce risks of serious injury and death during an accident by 50%, but unfortunately it was reported that the 23-year-old had not have been wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.

Car goes airborne before crashing into eastern Indiana home.Although the driver was sadly killed in the wreck, it was amazing that no one else was injured in the out-of-control drive despite the home being hit. That’s not always the case in Indiana car accidents and sometimes unlucky pedestrians end up involved.

In pedestrian accidents, drivers are often at fault and they can happen for a lot of reasons. Speeding is often a factor as is failing to stop at traffic signals, disregarding crosswalks, and driving under the influence or while distracted. Victims in pedestrian accidents have an increased risk for broken bones, head and spinal injury, and permanent disability and there can also be long lasting trauma and crippling anxiety.

Fort Wayne Pedestrian Accident

Fort Wayne Indiana pedestrian injury accidentElizabeth Eckland, 29, of Fort Wayne, was hit by a car while crossing the street in the 2000 block of South Anthony Blvd. early Monday morning. Police found her lying in the grass on the side of the road with blood coming out of her left ear.

Emergency crews told Indiana’s NewsCenter that Eckland’s pupils were fixed and dilated. She was taken to the hospital, where she was still in critical condition as of that evening. The driver of the Chevy Lumina that hit her was not injured.

Witnesses told police the driver was traveling north on S. Anthony when the vehicle struck Eckland and then a light pole. Officers temporarily closed the road between Creighton Ave. and Simons St. for about an hour while they reconstructed the scene.

“The investigators are looking for what the driver was doing at the time of this accident, what the pedestrian was doing,” Officer Raquel Foster told Indiana’s NewsCenter. “Did the pedestrian attempt to cross at an unsafe intersection? Did she use a crosswalk? Did the driver reach down to grab a cigarette? Was the driver on a cell phone?”

Eckland’s friends and family are waiting for word on her condition, and unfortunately, they aren’t the only ones in facing this situation. In 2009, pedestrian fatalities accounted for 7.2 percent of all traffic fatalities in the state of Indiana. Nationally, that percentage is even higher – 12.1 percent of people killed in traffic accidents in the United States were pedestrians.
