The death of a loved one is always tragic, always heartbreaking, and forever changes the lives of their surviving family members. When that death is caused by the carelessness or negligence of another person, it’s understandable that their family and community would be angry and frustrated, maybe even confused. Fatal Indianapolis car accidents happen far too often, and none are more senseless than those caused by drunk drivers.
An Indianapolis man has finally been sentenced after a 2011 car accident took the life of a 43-year-old construction worker. Monday he pleaded guilty to operating a vehicle while intoxicated and causing death.
Last October he drove his car into a construction zone at 80mph where he struck a propane tank before running down the 43-year-old flagger. He hit another five vehicles before his car rolled and his out-of-control ride came to an end.
According to his passenger, the driver had been acting recklessly and erratically, speeding and running red lights while repeating ‘we gonna die today.’ Despite her pleads to slow down, the driver continued on his suicidal course, and the last thing she remembered seeing was the flagger waving at them to stop.
After the Indianapolis wreck, the driver was left with a broken ankle while his passenger suffered damage to her face – the construction worker was killed instantly.
Justice for the Negligent Car Accident in Indianapolis
The driver was arrested and charged with one count of reckless homicide on top of 17 counts of criminal recklessness with a vehicle. It wasn’t the first time he’d been in trouble. He had an eight page driving record with several citations including driving without a license, driving without insurance, and driving intoxicated.
He’ll be serving 10 years at the Indiana Department of Corrections and 5 years with Community Correction.
